The holy month of Ramadan is here. As preparation for this holy month shopping malls, stores and streets across the UAE always display symbols and adopt a festive mood for this season. With the circumstances brought about by the COVID-19, celebrating Ramadan is made challenging given the precautionary measures in place. However, we can still honor some traditions like family gatherings or praying in Mosques without leaving our homes. This time calls us into a spirit of hope, giving and creativity. This holy month is all about humility and making simple things special. Here are a few DIY Décor Ideas to fill your homes with the spirit of Ramadan:

Ramadan Calendar

Create a handmade calendar out of pieces of cloth or paper with little pockets representing each day of the holy month. As Dates are a staple during Ramadan, place a Date in the handmade “date” pockets that symbolize the breaking of the fast by eating a date. Hang this Ramadan Calendar in your home as a reminder of the custom of fasting and also as a countdown to Eid!

Lights and Lanterns

Lanterns are favourite embellishments during the time of Ramadan. Get crafty by creating handmade lanterns from paper cutouts and decorate them with gems or confetti. Decorating your home in golden stars and moon pop-outs are fun for the kids. If you are not keen on placing tea lights in your homemade lanterns, you can also fill them with treats or sweets the kids will surely love.

Garland and Banners

Get festive and announce the spirit of Ramadan by hanging handcrafted “Ramadan Kareem” decals in your home or outside your door. Let the kids help decorate and color the banners and create their own artwork around the home.

Ramadan Reminders

Ramadan doesn’t have to be extravagant. A simple reminder such as a chalkboard writing, or a memo stuck on the fridge helps deepen your gratitude for this festive month. Let’s not forget that it is also a religious and spiritual month, therefore a timely reminder like the remaining days until Eid, prayer timings, or Iftar and Suhoor timings. Writing a daily Dua or a Surah from the Quran also increases our spirituality and creates a blessed atmosphere in our homes.

Whatever we do, we hope this time brings us joy and a meaningful Ramadan.
