Hydrogen as UAE's Best Renewable Energy Solution

The ground breaking ceremony of the region's first solar-powered Green Hydrogen project in Dubai will possibly make UAE a global leader of using renewable energy. Using solar and wind to produce hydrogen and subsequently other power applications will show others the way to be self-sufficient in energy terms.

The first of its kind - solar-driven hydrogen electrolysis facility - in MENA region will be located at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and chairman of the Expo 2020 Dubai Higher Committee did the honors of breaking the ground on Feb 3, 2019.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa), Expo 2020 Dubai and Siemens are the collective collaborators for this project.

The project priorities include positively impacting the environment by making Dubai a model of energy efficiency and safety. Although, the limitations of green hydrogen technology are yet to be understood, the intention of the project is to use the hydrogen produced at the facility by storing and deploying it for re-electrification, transportation and other uses.

When vehicles undergo heat stress in Dubai’s climate, hydrogen cells can address the problem which is also said to improve their longevity. Many such applications awaits to be explored with growing interest from all sectors of energy usage.

Expo 2020 plans to showcase hydrogen mobility by powering a number of fuel-cell vehicles with the hydrogen generated at the facility. Live data of the green hydrogen electrolysis will be streamed at the venue. Visitors to the exhibition will be also transported to the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park for a first-hand look.

The impact of renewable sources of energy is immense when you consider that Dubai is already leading the initiative by installing solar panels on house tops as per recent announcement. Living conditions will also improve for people who are able to use green forms of energy to up their lifestyle with a pollution free environment from lesser vehicular emissions.
